Keeping Landscape Photography at Its Best
Philosophy
Landscape photography can tell a story! Telling stories with your camera forces you to slow down, take in the details and reflect on them. This is a simple way to improve your photography skills.
Consider a few important questions.
What inspires you about this scene?
What elements in the scene caught your attention?
What elements (such as theme or line or point-of-view) do you want to keep?
These are the most beautiful landscapes that you will find, so don’t forget to look at the road as a guide. You’ll find the most stunning scenery if you have a map and a GPS. As you begin to seek out the most beautiful locations, you’ll develop a habit of looking for them and asking yourself how you can recreate their essence in more difficult places.
Concepts
A simple idea that can help you create balance is to divide the scene into thirds. This can be done both vertically and horizontally. This can be done by creating three horizontal and two vertical lines. However, your horizon or any other prominent line should remain on one of these horizontal lines. A general rule of symmetry is to position your focal point at one of the intersections of these lines.
You can allow yourself to be creative when you have balance. If you’re not satisfied with the other options, portraits can be transformed into landscape photos. Portraits in the landscape are best taken close up, like a head-and-shoulders photograph. You can create interest by placing your main subject out of the centre. This will allow you to add some graphic elements such as lead-in lines and interesting backgrounds. Visual interest is key to showing your creativity.
Equipment
Many believe that having the right setup or lens is the key to great landscape photos. However, you will rarely see images that aren’t. These photos show that creativity and composition are more important than any other factors in determining a photo’s success. A poor composition or content can make an image look terrible, regardless of its clarity and sharpness.
A macro lens can be helpful but not necessary, depending on the detail you want to capture. To remove a dull and boring sky, a telephoto lens is very useful. A tripod is the best piece of equipment you can take.
Wide-angle lenses are often used to create landscapes. They allow you more space in your frame and offer greater perspective options. A wide-angle zoom lens allows you to frame the scene more easily and crop out distracting elements. However, you will still need to follow the rule of thirds. These simple tips will help you create stunning landscapes.
